From Rivera's Groove Box #261: Take One - Say My Name (I Don't Think So)

Sexy house. But since hasn't house music ever been sexy? It's dance music, it is supposed to feel sexy. George Morel made very nice garage sounding tracks, and he had his own sound - he didn't really work much with sampling other records (liiiike so many others did back then). Co-produced with Bobby D'Ambrosio, sexy vocals by Pamela Belcher (her only songwriting credit). Excuse me Charles, you want meee to say your name? I don't think so.

From Rivera's Groove Box #260: Princess Di - Who's Dick This

Loudmouthed, X-rated, ghetto style New Jersey house. The beat is nice, as is its raw production, garage sounding grooves. Very nice. Princess Di also made a few other loudmouthed X-rated underground house tunes.

From Rivera's Groove Box #257: James Braun - Tearjerker EP

James Braun - Tearjerker EP (Tartelet Records, 2017)

After a five-year hiatus, Tartelet mainstay James Braun returns with the EP Tearjerker, announcing his debut album for 2018.

I like the playful happy synth chord melodies of Tearjerker. Hakkebøf is a solid piece of hypnotic techno, one meant for those dark and sweaty basement dance nights. All tracks are very neatly put together with a superb sound quality. Deep and exciting dance music!

From Rivera's Groove Box #256: Justin Martin - Snow Day

Excellent deep, melancholic and dreamy house music. The day I uploaded this video to youtube, it was snowing and the snow stayed for a few days until it melted. The long term weather forecast says that in the bottom half of november, it will get colder and more snow is expected. December is promising to be very cold and snowy. I'm not that into cold weather and snow, but the kids love it!

From Rivera's Groove Box #255: Volruptus - Hessdalen

Iceland is a mystic land, and so is the techno music which originates from there. Producers like Exos, Bjarki, Ruxpin, Sanasol or Ozy are names which bring a smile to many techno music lovers all around the world. Volruptus is a new name from the Icelandic techno scene, but in a short time he has gained lot of attention with his doings. It's no wonder a forward-thinking techno label like Nina Kraviz Trip recordings has signed his latest EP. Volruptus is making classic sounding electro techno music, which is influenced from all things cosmic, extraterrestial, sci-fi and alien. In fact, Volruptus himself says he is an alien who has been reborn inside a human body with a mission to create and spread new and wonderful sounds to us unknowing humans. Listening to this track, I say that I totally believe this. Monochromatic music with crisp drum machine beats and weird beeping lazer synthesizers, which make the listener feel like he will start floating through space. It all sounds like Volruptus is trying to put together an intergalatic morse code, contacting some far out living alien civilization. I could see this music being compared easily with the likes of Drexciya, Legowelt or Hagues I-F, but Volruptus is still a newcomer and he has plenty of time to prove himself among these electro techno giants.

From Rivera's Groove Box #253: Michael Watford - Holdin On'

Ron Trent says that this is among the best deep house track ever recorded. I agree. An early Roger Sanchez production, one of his finest.

From Rivera's Groove Box #252: Molima - Think'in Bout U

This is it. Officially, this is the cutest house track ever. An obscure US New Jersey deep house gem from 1992. It's a mysterious track, because this is the only track Molima ever did. The producers behind the track, Canadian Len Grant and Naresh Sukhu didn't release much house tracks either, but their other house record called 'Jazz Party' is worth also checking out for some genuine early 90s garage house vibes. And don't forget to check out and subscribe to Underground Music Channel from Youtube from some other great uploads!

From RIvera's Groove Box #251: R.I.P. Productions - Deep Inspiration

Oh man. Is this like the deepest UK Garage track ever created? Certainly one of the finest from that style. This track was originally released in 1996 and was one of three tracks on the Deep Dubs Vol 1 EP. R.I.P. Productions records have been highly sought after. Released when UK Garage was in its prime time years, before the Speed Garage and 2 Step craze took it over. The duo consists of Omar Adimora & Tim Liken (aka Tim Deluxe). Another popular project of theirs was Double 99 which released the monster hit 'RIP Groove'.

From RIvera's Groove Box #250: Donna Summer - I Feel Love (Patrick Cowley Remix)

You know, with really good tracks which you just can't get out of your head, the tracks you put on repeat and listen to over and over again, hoping the track just keeps going, never ending, but then the song gets over again... a pioneering disco jock and producer named Patrick Cowley came to a brilliant solution with 'I Feel Love' – why not extend the track way beyond imagination and keep the dancefloor packed. And that's what he exactly did. The remix is stretched to nearly sixteen minutes with extended passages and overdubbed effects, but still keeping true to the original. The final result came to be the blueprint of the disco remix – just extend the best parts of the track and keep the dancefloor happy. This remix, when commercially released in 1982 made the original track popular at the charts and clubs again, and this just is a pure case of win.

From RIvera's Groove Box #249: Raw Elements - Raw Basics

Super stripped down underground deep house gem from 1992. Produced by Mateo & Matos, one of their very first releases from their prolific discography. Very minimal with production, only keeping the 'raw basics' of a house track.

From RIvera's Groove Box #248: Low End Theory - Wicked

Acid house sound is really something different - no song, no structure, no melody, not even a catchy chorus you can sing along with. It's not what you could describe as good music, but yet it is still so groovy and great for dancing at the rave or club. This one's from DJ Deeon and Chip Dilla, two hard knocks from Chicago's Dance Mania Records. The world is a ghetto indeed.

From RIvera's Groove Box #247: Drew Sky - Razzmatazz

An old Classic from 1992! Played often by Moodymann in his DJ sets. The vocals are sampled from Quincy Jones 'Razzamatazz' and the melody is from MFSB 'Sexy'. Very lo-fi sound, basement style, just like lots of producers from Chicago tended to be. After his debut EP Drew Sky went on to release a string of ghetto house style records on Dance Mania, which suited his minimal stripped down sound.

From RIvera's Groove Box #246: Caustic Window - Flutey

Caustic Window is an unreleased album from Aphex Twin. It was produced under the alias Caustic Window. Originally planned for release in 1994, the album was cancelled, with only five copies being produced. One of the copies, which surfaced for sale in 2014, was bought and digitally distributed through a Kickstarter campaign. It was later sold for $46,300 on eBay to the creator of Minecraft. Every penny well spent. I like 'Flutey' the best from this album, it has a melancholic, but very beautiful vibe. It's mechno - melancholic techno, get it? Haha. And what a nice accompanying video by the29nov films.

From RIvera's Groove Box #245: DJ Milton - 909 State

DJ Milton is a pioneering figure in the Chicago ghetto house scene. I don't know for sure if it is true, that he is serving a long prison sentence incarcerated in Illinois, or is it just a rumor. But the man sure knew how to program some tight pounding house beats on drum machines. This track is very minimal and tracky, like the majority of ghetto house tracks, but at the same time, it is also very catchy with its hypnotic synth lines. Definitely among DJ Milton's best hits!

From Rivera's Groove Box #244: Aftershock - Slave To The Vibe (Club Dub)

This my jam right here. A neat garage house groove from the UK with a piano hook which makes your head bob to the beat. There's a thousand garage tracks out there, but they rarely come so perfect as this.

From Rivera's Groove Box #243: Jason Grove - Mastercut 4

Little is known about this mysterious producer, some say he is from Detroit, some rumours tell that he is an under thirty something Parisian, or even a Rumenian producer, but that is all debatable until the producer decides to come out for real. What is certain is that his music is fresh and cool, a throwback to the old school New York deep garage house sound.

From Rivera's Groove Box #242: World Nation - Got Me Burning Up

There are two things what make my heart pound in a sweet rhythm - my significant other and NY style deep garage house grooves. This one is from 'Brutal Bill' Marquez, who is a profilic producer from the early 90s New York house scene with many other aliases and classic tracks to choose from.

From Rivera's Groove Box #241: DJ Soch - Unknown

Fine deep house grooves with some real nice vocals on top. DJ Soch belongs to the new wave of outsider sounding lo-fi house producers from Italy among with DJ Octopus, Nas1, Lucretio, Marieu, Die Roh, Fabio Monesi, Steve Murphy, Sagats & Madi Grein. These guys know how to keep things fresh and funky.

From Rivera's Groove Box #240: Unit Moebius - Beat That Perculator

Here's Unit Moebius own take of the ghetto house sound of Chicago. It's raw and minimal - just like the tracks which it was inspired from. It features the samples of three well known Chicago house ghetto classics: Johnny Dangerous 'Problem No. 13'; Cajmere 'Percolator'; MDIII 'The Pressure Cooker'.

kolmapäev, 3. mai 2017

From Rivera's Groove Box #239: Route 8 - I Dream About Acid

Proper acid house track incorporating a sample loop of the classic 'Fantasy Girl' by Pierre's Pfantasy Club. Route 8 is a producer known for his analogue sounding techno music from Hungary. His works have been featured prominently on the lo-fi leaning label Lobster Theremin.

From Rivera's Groove Box #238: DJ Deeon & DJ Funk - Pony (Deeon's Mix)

You just gotta love the simplicity ghetto house music offers. It's loud, minimal and done with basic equipment. Some may even call these stripped downed house tracks too simple. But it totally works. DJ Funk and Deeon are among the best-known names in the ghetto house scene, and 'Pony' is probably the funkiest offering from their overly massive discography.

From Rivera's Groove Box #237: Rimbaudian - Drop It On 'Em

Now that the once strictly underground sub-genre of house music has emerged to more broader audience that it was once intended for, with producers like DJ Seinfeld, Ross From Friends, Mall Grab or DJ Boring gaining millions of views of their tracks on Youtube, the lo-fi dance music scene has been the subject of some backlash by the trendy blogs and news media webzines like Thump or Factmag. Accused of being overly too aesthetic, lack of original ideas, silly gimmicks, ironic and almost parodying attitude to the scene, some have called the sub-genre as a spoof of house music.

But that talk is all nonsense. Rubbish. The truth is that some of the very best underground dance music anthems of recent years have stemmed from the lo-fi scene. Like this track from Rimbaudian, which incidentally is a DJ Seinfeld alias. It's beautiful, and the fan video goes along with it perfectly. Totally mesmerizing.

From Rivera's Groove Box #236: Victor Simonelli Presents N.Y.'s Finest - Do You Feel Me

Here's a proper house track which still feels so fresh like it was done just yesterday. This classic, considered by some house music enthusiasts as one of the best ever, never gets old. It certainly is among the most memorable garage deep house tracks, and probably the best track produced by the New Yorkian prolific DJ and producer Victor Simonelli. Sampling the vocals from Zhana's 'Sanctuary Of Love' which is an early 90s rave track, but Victor Simonelli's track makes it all sound much deeper and smoother in a deep house key. The bass, melody, and piano riff is also sampled, or possibly replayed from the 1982 Salsoul disco cut 'Moment Of My Life' by Inner Life. But it's all put together very classy and fine sounding. This track was played virtually anywhere in '93 where there was house music heard.

From Rivera's Groove Box #235: Alison Limerick - Where Love Lives

Strange I never regarded this tracks as one of the best house tracks ever, although I knew its importance. Maybe I thought it was a too obvious choice, being that this track is one of the most known and popular house songs of all time. But it certainly sounds like its a true underground track - it was designed with the New York biggest underground clubs like Roxy and Sound Factory in mind.

The track is amazing, it's perfect from start to finish - that piano intro, the awesome production and beats that still stand up today, the astoundingly good voice... no wonder it was selected by Mixmag as the number one in its 100 Greatest Dance Singles Of All Time list in 1996, adding: 'Where Love Lives (Come On in) is the greatest dance record of all time because it's got everything. It swings, it makes girls pout, boys preen and hearts sing. There's a touch of sadness about it but it's incredibly uplifting, reaching a bittersweet joy that only the most spiritual of house achieves. Ms Limerick - whose subsequent career never lived up to this - sings with a throaty, controlled abandon, hitting the high notes while arms hit the ceiling. Even the lyrics are cool: strong woman sends out her love but gives her lover a bit of a slagging while she's about it.'

From Rivera's Groove Box #234: Jordan Fields - Feelin Music

Here's a true gem. A previously unreleased track from Chicago house producer Jordan Fields. A prolific underground house artist who has recorded tracks for many big and also smaller house labels since the 90s, establishing himself as one of the Windy City's more promising talents. But I still feel he is an unsung hero in the underground scene, giving his substantive contribution to the craft, yet his work is more known for the true die-hard house heads. But everyone who considers themselves a true house music lover, should hear tracks like 'Feelin Music'! Recorderd in 1991 just when the NYC deep garage house sound was emerging, this track seems to be influenced by the many records which came out from the legendary Strictly Rhythm label. But none of these records match the minimal and raw production and sound 'Feelin Music' has. That's probably also the reason the track was unreleased back then - house music tended to sound more polished back then, with record labels hiring studios and sound engineers to work on tracks. Still, this track is an interesting excursion to the house sound the bedroom producers had back then. And while in 1991 this was deemed as something too rough, it fits perfectly with the current wave of 90s garage sounding deep house revival, and also the emerging lo-fi house scene.

From Rivera's Groove Box #233: Swirl People - Call Bert

I like the Swirl People. My favourite deep house duo from Belgium. This track is one of their best, but really - I dig all of their sound. They had their own slow funked out style of house music. Clever samples, chunky beats, rolling basslines. Awesome house music!

From Rivera's Groove Box #232: DAT Project III - Set Me Free

Nervous Dog Records - a sublabel of the legendary NY underground house label Nervous Records. You can find some great forgotten deep house tracks with a garage sound and feel on these labels. Put them in your record bag, bring the to the club or your mates house as some secret weapons, suprise them with your supreme masterful knowledge about real house music!

From Rivera's Groove Box #231: DJ Semen - Brazilian Trans Are The Most Beautiful In The World Because They Know How To Dance Well

Just wow. What a track title and artist name. And the music is great! Not much info about this mysterious techno producer, except for a soundcloud page which says: 'I'm not DJ; I'm not a musician; I'm not a producer; I dont exist'. But someone had to put this thing together, so whoever you are, DJ Semen - thank you! Amazing.

From Rivera's Groove Box #229: World Power Feat. Althea McQueen ‎– I'm Happy (After The Rave)

I just love a good garage deep house groove. Makes me feel good and happy. There are so many uninspiring garage house tracks, but this one here is not - it's got that nice early 90s deep Strictly Rhythm vibe going on. Great sounding keys and the prolonged organ musical notes are a nice touch, which give the track an unique sound.
